We all know that Our Lady of Lourdes is one of the most popular and loved titles of Mary in the Catholic Church and known over all the world. We all also probably know that on February 11, 1858, a young, French peasant girl named Bernadette Soubirous was collecting firewood with her sister and a friend near a dump in the town of Lourdes where they lived.
There, Bernadette saw a beautiful woman appear holding a rosary, so she began praying the Rosary with the lady. The lady asked Bernadette to return to the Grotto, and after a while, she revealed herself as “the Immaculate Conception,” in fact, the woman was claiming to be Mary, the Mother of God.
Following Our Lady’s instructions, Bernadette dug in the dirt, where Mary told her a healing spring of water would be found. Today, Lourdes is one of the most popular pilgrimage sites for those seeking healing.
But the miracles of Lourdes didn’t end with Bernadette, they continue even today. But the first verified miracle took place in 1858 when a woman named Catherine traveled to Lourdes in search of healing. Catherine had fallen from a tree and severely injured her right hand with two of her fingers entirely paralyzed. She met Bernadette at the Lourdes grotto and simply washed her hand in the small spring. Suddenly, the paralysis of her fingers disappeared, and she could move them just as she could before her fall.
Just last year on Feb 12, 2018, the Associated Press reported another miracle approved by the Church involving a French nun, the 70th Lourdes miracle recognized by the Catholic Church. The nun’s name was also Bernadette – Sister Bernadette Moriau. Sister Bernadette had been suffering from spinal problems which had made her unable to walk. She was in a wheelchair and completely disabled since 1980.
According to the Associated Press, when Sister visited Lourdes, she said she “never asked for a miracle,” but after attending a blessing for the sick, something began to change in her. “I had a feeling throughout my body, like a relaxation, warmth. I returned to my room and removed my braces,” recalled the 79-year old nun.
“I could move,” Sister Bernadette said. Then, she stood up and walked away from her wheelchair, braces, and pain medications. The International Medical Committee of Lourdes extensively researched Sister Bernadette’s recovery and found that the nun’s healing could not be scientifically explained. There have been more than 7,000 miraculous recoveries attributed to the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes and Our Lady continues to bring about miracles in the lives of those who are devoted to Her.
